Last night as I sit on the bed and pay a few bills:
Jake "Mom, whatcha doin?"
Me "Paying bills."
Jake "Why?"
Me "Because we have to pay bills to have a house, to have clothes, food, toys, cars. That's why mommy and daddy have to go to work everyday"
Jake was already tuned out at that point (what I thought). We went about our evening rituals of bath, brush teeth, pj's, etc and went to bed.
This morning, I was in the shower and Jake was already up (He is my early riser!). He was in watching sponge bob cartoons and I could hear some noise but didn't figure out what it was. After I finished getting ready for work, he came to me with a Lightnin' McQueen toolbox and said "Here Mom, this is for you." Of course, I said "Wow, Jake thank you". As I opened it, I saw all of his shiny pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters along with the wide eyed smile upon his face.
He told me "Mommy, you can have my money and you don't have to go work" My eyes welled up with tears. I think that was the sweetest gesture ever.
I hugged him and told him thank you and that he could keep his money, and he took a penny out and stuck it in my pocket and said "You take that penny with you to work today".
I will always always cherish my penny.
Side note - of course after this glorious moment his sister was up and realized he had broken into her piggy bank/jar as well and confiscated her coins to help in his act of compassion. From that point on, the screaming and running and chaos returned to our lives.
